DoCoMo CEO Keiji Tachikawa told Reuters at CTIA2002 in Orlando that AT&T would follow up the launch with 3G network services in 2003. AT&T officials did not confirm Tachikawa’s statements.

With more than 30 million subscribers in Japan, i-mode is the world’s most popular mobile data service. Using compact HTML protocols and DoCoMo’s digital and wideband CDMA networks, the service has been hailed as the model for all other mobile Internet offerings.

NTT DoCoMo has partnered with several international carriers to launch i-mode internationally. In the U.S., it took a 20% stake in AT&T Wireless more than a year ago, but both carriers have been quiet about plans for a U.S. launch until now.
