Though labeled version 2.0, the POD is one of the first the company is publicly discussing. The venture capital-funded company has been quietly testing the first version of its software with Fortune 500 companies.
In version 2.0, the company has give administrators the ability to control permissions based on a variety of factors including individual user, group or company. The POD also includes real-time exchange with a centrally controlled file sharing, so documents and folders of any size or type can be shared, transferred, stored and backed up in a secure environment with log-based audit trails.
Initially, however, the company is counting on the software’s IM capability to get it in the door of corporate IT departments. Omnipod has made its platform interoperable with the other major IM vendors.
“In the short term, we’ll see IM adopted in the business environment,” said Ryan Alexander, president of Omnipod. “I think file sharing will be after IM. You need rules. You need security.”
The company is offering both licensed and hosted versions of the POD.
