The new architecture is supposed to bring the cost of building out bandwidth to sustain those services down because of its support of Gig-E rather than other technologies that use Sonet, according to Russ Sharer, vice president of marketing at Occam.

“By using Gig-E and IP [carriers] can reduces processes and have better content security and be much more cost effective,” Sharer said.

Although the first products to support the new architecture won’t be out until the first quarter of 2003, the company is currently in lab trials, according to Sharer.--Liane H. LaBarba, senior editor
