No radiation was released during the fire and no one was injured, according to Southern California Edison, which is majority owner of the plant. The fire started in an electrical switching room, possibly from a short in the power supply to the plant.

It took firefighters 30 minutes to put out the blaze, but the reactor could remain offline for several weeks while equipment is repaired and the accident is investigated. A second reactor at the plant is running.

Both reactors produce enough electricity to each power 1.1 million homes. The loss of the one reactor will put a further strain on an electricity-starved California.
