Riding on the heals of an optical Ethernet deal announced in early October, today Nortel Networks said it has won a three-year deal with Cox Communications worth $65 million. The deal includes Nortel’s OPTera Metro 3100, 3400 and 3500 multiservice platforms. Cox has 650,000 residential customers served by the DMS switches.

“This shows the commitment and momentum we are gaining in the space,” said Elaine Smiles, director of cable marketing for Nortel. “We are the sole telephony vendor for Cox.”

Nortel is working with most of the MSOs, according to Smiles. “It’s nice to be able to share this one and they can stand behind the value that [the equipment] is giving them,” Smiles said. “It’s been very successful for them.”

Nortel claims the equipment saves customers 50% in operational costs, according to Smiles.
