Nortel gets another Western Wireless contract

After handing a contract for GSM/GPRS/EDGE network gear to Nortel Networks in May, Western Wireless also has hired Nortel to provide CDMA 2000 equipment to cover select markets in rural West and Midwest.

The CDMA contract could be worth up to $90 million to Nortel. The two companies ran a successful trial of CDMA 2000 in fixed deployment for rural applications to years ago, and Nortel handled the carrier’s first fixed wireless CDMA installation in Texas last year. Western Wireless’ GSM infrastructure, meanwhile, supports its mobile business and mobile roaming with other GSM carriers, such as T-Mobile, AT&T Wireless and Cingular Wireless.
