Nokia loses market share in the second quarter

Mobile-phone leader Nokia lost some ground to rivals Motorola and Ericsson in the second quarter, according to Gartner Dataquest.

Nokia’s share of global sales fell to 34.5% from 35.3% in the first quarter. Motorola’s share increased to 14.8% from 13.2% in the first quarter, while Ericsson grew its share to 8.3% from 6.8%, said Gartner.

Ericsson regained the third position after losing share to Siemens in the first quarter. Siemens had a market share of 7.9% in the second quarter, while Samsung grabbed 6.9%.

Overall, Gartner said 89.8 million phones were shipped to consumers globally in the second quarter, down 7% from the first quarter.
