The system was unveiled at the PT/Expo Comm China 2000 exhibition in Beijing, China. The new 800MHz systems will be available for deliveries during the first half of next year.

"The launch of the Nokia TETRA 800MHz system expands Nokia’s strong TETRA portfolio and will provide new market opportunities for Nokia in countries such as China and Latin America, where the 800MHz frequency is required," said Kari Suneli, senior vice president, Professional Mobile Radio, Nokia Networks.

TETRA networks offer secure, digital mobile communications for public safety and security organizations, network operators, transportation and utility companies, according to a Nokia release.

Because the system’s functions are implemented by software, future developments and enhancements to the system can easily be introduced without disturbing the network.
