Nokia bullish on China

Nokia raised its estimates for China’s mobile phone subscriptions in 2001 based on its belief that growth in that market will remain strong going forward. Nokia now forecasts 160 million subscriptions will be sold in China by the end of the year, up from a previous forecast of 140 million.

Nokia has not made predictions for years beyond 2001, and a spokeswoman for the company reportedly disputed comments by Nokia China deputy chief executive Chijin Liu, who reported that subscriptions should rise to 250-260 million by the end of 2002. Nokia maintains those estimates correspond with the end of 2005, and that they originated from the Chinese telecommunications ministry as opposed to Nokia itself.
