NFOEC: Nortel stretches its metro DWDM

From the NFOEC show in Orlando, Nortel Networks announced that it is extending the reach of the DWDM equipment in its OPTera Metro 5200 multi-service platform. In the fourth quarter of this year, Nortel will increase the span of its 2.5 Gb/s channels from 200 km to 350 km and the range of its 10 Gb/s channels to 110 km without dispersion compensation. In the first quarter of 2004, Nortel plans to increase the range again to 600 km for 10 Gb/s channels. The vendor said the extended reach should reduce network costs by 50%.
