MSN HighSpeed plans to offer New Edge delivery to small cities, towns and semi-rural areas--New Edge’s core markets--early next year. Currently, MSN HighSpeed utilizes Northpoint Communications to provide DSL service in higher populated areas.
“MSN is really committed to bring high-speed access to everyone, regardless where they live,” the spokeswoman said. “This really greatly expands where MSN can deliver.”
Introduced in late September via its presence in RadioShack outlets and a Web site, MSN HighSpeed offers broadband access through a two-way satellite connection provided by StarBand Communications, the spokeswoman said. The agreement with New Edge gives MSN HighSpeed the ability to access some of these consumers via a landline connection that is as much as 25 times faster than standard dial-up access.
“This alliance brings broadband DSL deeper into the consumer mainstream and helps bridge the digital divide in underserved communities where broadband demand is as strong as it is in the major cities,” said Dan Moffat, president, CEO and co-founder of New Edge Networks, in a prepared statement. “For New Edge Networks, the alliance with MSN validates the value of our national broadband DSL network, coverage and reach into small cities around the country.”
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
