The Japanese mobile handset player had had about 12% of the U.S. analog mobile phone market before it exited in late 2000. This time around, the company is planning to introduce 2.5 generation phones, which will be based on GPRS.

NEC already has nabbed about 30% of the Japanese market by way of its NTT DoCoMo relationship. In Europe, the company has started shipping 2.5G handsets to Royal KPN. NEC also is slated to supply 1 million third-generation handsets to Hutchison Whampoa.
