NanoOpto takes on building block strategy

You have to start somewhere, and an optical component start-up out of Somerset, N.J., called NanoOpto is hoping its components will be one of those first steps in the design of equipment such as fiber amplifiers and optical switches. Today the company introduced its SubWave Phase management family of components to complement its polarization components introduced earlier this year.

“We are creating a set of basic building blocks of optical functionality,” said Hubert Kostal, vice president of marketing at NanoOpto. “The components can be stacked vertically to create interesting combinations used for polarity, phase measurement and components,” Kostal said.

NanoOpto’s components are developed with proprietary nano-optic and nano manufacturing technology, and are designed to handle optical performance and to ease design integration and assembly. So far the company has a few design wins and is “looking for sweet spots,” Kostal said.

The new products involved with NanoOpto’s second family of products are low retardance waveplates, standard waveplates and custom waveplates.
