MSN broadband plans delayed by Enron collapse

Microsoft officials yesterday said Enron’s bankruptcy will delay MSN’s plans to build out its high-speed data services.

Enron is one of MSN’s key providers of backbone capacity, and while MSN’s access contracts with Bell companies and cable operators still stand, Microsoft has suspended plans to have MSN broadband available to 90% of DSL capable homes by the end of the first quarter 2002. Microsoft officials said MSN hopes to reach that goal by mid-year 2002.

MSN currently offers broadband services in 33 markets and has signed agreements with major DSL, cable and satellite partners. In addition to Enron, Microsoft also contracts with Qwest Communications for backbone services.
