Motorola to lay off executives, staff

Twenty percent of Motorola executives with the title of vice president or higher will be laid off by the end of March, the company announced yesterday, reducing its executive ranks from 600 to 480. This is the company’s first attempt to streamline its executive ranks.

In related news, Motorola also announced yesterday that it would lay off 900 workers at a semiconductor plant in Hong Kong.

The layoffs are part of the job cuts Motorola announced last month. Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola plans to shed 48,400 employees via layoffs and the sale of business units by the end of the year, a one-third reduction from the 150,000 employees the company had worldwide in August 2000.
