The agreement, which is not the first of its kind for Sprint PCS, is expected to begin in the second half of 2001. The carrier has made similar agreements with Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks and Samsung, said a spokesman with Sprint PCS.

Technically, the arrangement will provide code division multiple access equipment via interoperability specifications and 3G cdma2000 1x high-speed packet data to wireless network subscribers a portion of Sprint PCS’ markets.

“We feel we have the most cost-efficient path for getting to 3G because [we use] CDMA,” the spokesman said. Agreements with large vendors like Motorola will help the carrier better reach its 3G goals in the long run, he continued.

At this time, Motorola has received network upgrade orders for Chicago; Charlotte, N.C.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus, Ohio; Greensboro, N.C.; Hawaii; Knoxville, Tenn.; Norfolk, Va.’ Raleigh, N.C.; and in Richmond, Va.
