Mitsubishi to close U.S. wireless operations

Mitsubishi Electric said today it would close its U.S. wireless operations due to the lower demand worldwide for mobile phones, according to Reuters. Mitsubishi also announced it would cut 1000 contract workers form its semiconductor division in Japan by March 2002 while slashing its earnings outlook for the next two quarters.

Mitsubishi currently sells mobile phones through its U.S. subsidiary Mitsubishi Wireless, though most of its wireless sales are in Japan. The vendor said it originally expected to sell 28.2 million phones worldwide but has dropped that number to 18.5 million.
