The alliance gives Microsoft a more dominant foothold in a device market so far dominated by Nokia and its Symbian platform that is also embraced by other major handset vendors such as Ericsson-Sony.

The partnership also makes AT&T Wireless the first carrier to offer new enterprise-grade Microsoft .NET location-based services for mobile users on both laptops and Pocket PCs, using MapPoint .NET mapping and location services and the .NET compact framework.

Verizon Wireless and Microsoft earlier this year entered into an exclusive strategic alliance to co-develop and jointly market wireless data services. The offerings feature MSN services and content, Windows-powered devices and enterprise solutions.
