Liberty won’t do German cable telephony

Liberty Media has declined to risk a large investment in cable-telephony service even if it means winning regulatory approval for its $4.9 billion purchase of Deutsche Telekom’s cable assets.

The German cartel office reviewing Liberty’s purchase said it wanted Liberty to upgrade the cable network to handle multimedia and telephone applications to increase competition in the fixed-network segment that Deutsche Telekom dominates, but Liberty Chairman John Malone said the media conglomerate would not pursue telephony because it “has not practically been deployed anywhere on a large scale,” according to news services.
