Level 3 developing peering alternative

Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M.--Level 3 is working on an alternative to Tier 1 peering for smaller customers that can’t afford to build the infrastructure needed to carry the volume of traffic that would warrant such arrangements.

Still in concept stage, the advanced peering service would use the company’s MPLS-enabled network elements to let ISP customers carve out space on the Level 3 network.

“We’re trying address this network need without forcing them to build all this network capacity they would need,” said Dan Caruso, group vice president of network business for Level 3. “To be a peer, you’ve go to put a lot of network in place.”
