Terms of the deal were not announced, but a Level 3 spokesman described the agreement as "one of the most significant contracts Level 3 has executed." The deal calls for AOL to increase its use of the long-haul provider's dial-up access services both in terms of geography and number of ports. AOL has been using Level 3's managed modem services since 1999 and also purchases transport, co-location and other network services.

According to Level 3, it has sold about 1 million ports since entering the wholesale dial-up business in 1999. In addition, it completes more than 375 million dial-up Internet access calls and handles more than 12 billion minutes of online usage per month for its ISP customers.

In other news, Level 3 today announced a three-year agreement with United Online---parent company of value-priced ISPs NetZero and Juno---that calls for United Online to purchase (3) Connect Modem service in hundreds of U.S. cities. Level 3 will become the primary provider of wholesale dial-up Internet access service for United Online. Terms of the deal were not announced.
