Called the AnyPoint DSL Gateway 4200, the device includes a DSL modem and sits on the desktop beside a PC. After being customized by the service provider to include any advanced services and sent to the end user, the gateway’s self-configuring software guides the customer quickly through the final steps of provisioning.
While the gateway is designed to accelerate deployment and greatly reduce the need for expensive truck rolls, its greatest promise is that its universal plug-n-play support will let it become an off-the-shelf product, just like a narrowband modem, according to Marc Adams, product manager for broadband access operation for Intel.
“Service providers don’t want to be in the CPE business, they want to provide services,” Abrams said. “What this does is show that retail DSL is possible.”
Intel officials said the company plans to roll out
the gateway later this year.
