AT&T Wireless maintains it is reviewing Wi-Fi technology and how it might fit into its portfolio, though no decisions have been made as to whom the company might partner with if a joint venture were even on its agenda, said a company spokeswoman.

While there may be preliminary discussions at this point, the carrier is not prepared to say anything more than that, she said. IBM also declined to comment regarding speculation.

The New York Times earlier this week reported on Project Rainbow and the possibility of an industrywide joint venture. The Project Rainbow initiative was launched last year to hash out a plan for creating a nationwide Wi-Fi network. Since its creation, little has come out of it.

If the discussions between carriers, vendors and Wi-Fi proponents were to be successful, the newly formed venture would build hot spots in public areas, such as airports, throughout the U.S.
