Targeting the still developing international VDSL market, Ikanos also is demonstrating the ability to offer three channels of MPEG 4 video over short distances. In the U.S. market, the company is marketing its chip set as a way for carriers to extend Ethernet services off of fiber rings at distances up to 7000 feet.

“We think 4500 feet is the sweet spot,” said Richard Sekar, vice president of marketing for Ikanos. “At that point we can still do 22 Mbps downstream and 3 Mb/s upstream.”

At Supercomm, Extreme is using Ikanos' SmartLeap 8100 for its broadband access concentrators, the CleverConnect 150 chipset for customer premise equipment and the Ikanos Programmable Operating System.
