Turk Telekom adds DWDM Network

Turk Telekom is building a new high-speed national backbone to connect major cities across Turkey and expand the carrier’s telecommunications infrastructure to handle growing demand for multimedia services. The project, using dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology from Alcatel as part of a $30 million contract, will be able to carry up to 32 channels at 10 Gb/s (gigabits per second), the equivalent of 38 million simultaneous telephone conversations. Alcatel says the DWDM terrestrial solution for Turk Telekom includes forward error correction (FEC), a technology previously used for submarine networks, to improve the quality of the transmitted signal and reduce network costs. Alcatel also is supplying an integrated network management platform for DWDM and synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH).
