GPU to Add Lines On Amtrak Railways

GPU Telecom Services Inc. has reached an agreement with Amtrak giving GPU right-of-way to add 375-miles of fiber-optic cable along Amtrak rail lines. GPU Telecom will install fiber-optic lines along the Northeast Corridor rail line between New York City and Washington D.C., and along the Keystone line between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pa. In addition to these sites, the GPU Telecom fiber-optic system will include Newark, N.J., and Baltimore.

Completion of the 375-mile segment of the Northeast Corridor network is expected in the first quarter of 2001; the Harrisburg to Pittsburgh segment will be completed by the end of the year.

The fiber cable will be strung using existing Amtrak poles and standards; no new poles will be erected.
