German government probes Vodafone exec

Vodafone chief executive Chris Gent is being investigated by German prosecutors regarding $55.98 million in payments made to Mannesmann executives after they accepted Vodafone’s takeover bid last year. Investigators are exploring whether the appreciation awards and severance packages were payoffs in exchange for accepting the takeover offer.

A large portion of the payments, which were granted by the Mannesmann board, went to then Mannesmann chief executive Klaus Esser. Esser opposed the hostile takeover bid of Mannesmann until February 2000 when he accepted a slightly improved offer amid pressure from stockholders.
