Fujitsu to exit U.S. PBX business

As part of its restructuring plans to reduce costs, Fujitsu Limited today announced plans to “dispose of” Fujitsu Business Communications Systems by selling all or part of the Irvine, Calif.-based PBX business unit that employs a reported 762 people.

While Fujitsu will continue PBX development in Japan, its PBX operations in the U.S. did not perform well, “in part because of its lack of success in shifting to the IP solutions business,” according to the company.

Instead, Fujitsu will focus its U.S. efforts on photonics and network solutions, primarily through its Fujitsu Network Communications (FNC) subsidiary. A spokeswoman for FNC said the Richardson, Texas-based subsidiary is not affected by the Fujitsu cutbacks.
