FTTH expected to hit 1 million by 2004

The number of homes with direct fiber links is expected to jump to more than 1 million by 2004, according to new research released at this week’s Fiber To The Home conference in New Orleans.

That number is an increase of 330% over the expected 72,100 homes to 315,000 homes passed in 2003.

The research was conducted by research marketing firm Render, Vanderslice and Associates, which interviewed service providers and assessed current FTTH projects. The target markets for FTTH are large housing developments and planned communities.

So far several large incumbents such as BellSouth, SBC Communications and Verizon Communications have been testing the technology in limited areas, but none has taken the technology much beyond those individual projects.----Liane H. LaBarba, senior editor
