FCC adopts new wireless rules

The Federal Communications Commission this week adopted service rules for the commercial use of spectrum in the 71-76 GHz, 81-86 GHz, and 92-95 GHz bands, which are used for high-speed, point-to-point wireless local area networks and broadband Internet access, among other uses. The new rules call for a “flexible” non-exclusive licensing approach that will eschew the frequency coordination between users that traditionally had been required. The commission this week also adopted rules for the 1710-1755 MHz and 2110-2155 MHz bands that are used to provision 3G services via high-speed fixed and mobile networks. The new rules include provisions for application procedures, licensing, technical operations, and competitive bidding.
