In the advent of deregulation in 1996, PJM Interconnection was appointed as an Independent System Operator, responsible for guaranteeing reliable delivery of electricity from more than 500 generators on 8,000 miles of transmission lines.

PJM Interconnection met this task by creating an online energy exchange, PJM.com. Over 190 members buy and sell megawatts, determine where and how the energy will be routed and find out if there is room on the transmission lines to get the electricity there.

One hundred percent of PJM Interconnection’s electricity transactions take place on its Web site.

In addition to the energy exchange, members can trade excess capacity, view operational data and real-time prices.
