Ericsson reports more financial woes

Ericsson’s struggle to decrease costs throughout 2001 was evident in the company’s fourth-quarter results announced today.

The company posted a larger-than-expected loss of 4 cents per share. Analysts had expected a loss of 3 cents per share. Revenues were $5.54 billion compared with $8.73 billion in the fourth quarter 2000.

And CEO Kurt Hellstrom said the company’s results wouldn’t be much better in the first quarter. He forecast revenues ranging from flat to a 10% decline. Accelerating weakness in the systems business will contribute to a 32% sequential decline in revenues, driven by a sharp downturn in the company’s wireline business.
