DSL by the numbers

At the risk of being labeled an RBOC booster, I have to declare that SBC did a damn fine last quarter in their DSL numbers. I mean, 450,000 DSL subscribers in three months--that is a truly impressive number, and though every bone in my body longs to type pithy, sarcastic remarks, I can't bring myself to do it. 450,000. That's just a whole bunch.

Now let's see if the rest of the RBOCs will follow suit and become the true competitors to the cable industry they've claimed for years they would be. BellSouth posted 156,000 net DSL adds, also an impressive number considering the company is only at 1.6 million subs, compared to the 4 million SBC has under its belt.

The true test of how great Q1 was for the DSL market will come Tuesday, when Verizon reports its numbers. Like SBC, Verizon has been on a data tear, hacking back its prices and building out its footprint. If Verizon Online can meet or top SBC's numbers, the first three months of 2004 will not only represent the most significant quarter DSL has ever seen, but also a complete reversal of the lackluster trends the technology set when it limped out of the starting gate.

Now my question (and my pithy comment): Why didn't the RBOCs do this three years ago?
