Distributed Generation on the Rise

Distributed generation technologies are increasingly being investigated and implemented by utility companies, according to a report by Chartwell. The report found that utilities are looking at distributed generation, such as fuel cells and microturbines, to meet demand, better serve customers, increase reliability for large power users and save money.

Chartwell found more than 100 energy companies already have relationships with distributed generation vendors and manufacturers, with many of these companies installing or testing distributed generation technologies at customer sites or their affiliates acting as distribution agents for distributed generation companies.

The study found that while many utility companies viewed distributed generation as a threat, they are now looking toward the emerging technologies as an opportunity.
