Dell made its announcement as Gartner Dataquest released a new report indicating that PDA shipments for the first three quarters of the year are down 8.3% compared with the previous year. Gartner Dataquest analysts said the market will need an exceptionally strong shipment of PDAs in the fourth quarter to sustain worldwide growth for 2002.

Worldwide, Palm, Hewlett Packard and Sony accounted for 58% of worldwide PDA shipments. In the U.S. market, Palm has a commanding lead of market share, with nearly 40% of all units shipped in the third quarter.
