Energy cooperatives will now be able to distinguish themselves from the online energy crowd. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the Internet’s governing body, decided to add .coop to the list of domain suffixes such as .com and .net.

The National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA) led the lobbying for the new domain name. The NCBA argued that the new domain suffix would benefit consumers, allowing them to distinguish cooperatives from for-profit businesses.

Cooperatives hope the new suffix will increase online traffic and sales. The NCBA will start registering cooperatives by mid-2001, and expects to register 150,000 addresses in four years.
