The new device, announced earlier today by Palm, incorporates AOL instant messaging applications with Palm.net wireless portal and enterprise applications. Upon its release Palm hopes to compete with Research in Motion, which has dominated much of the enterprise world in the wireless messaging market. Cingular’s Mobitex network currently houses a variety of Blackberry devices as well as other wireless modem enabled devices. At the end of 2001, Cingular reported 730,000 subscribers in the packet network’s 260 metropolitan markets.

The new device will be available this week, but Palm did not specify whether the initial launch a full commercial deployment or a trial.
