Cingular customer adds fall well short of projections

While Sprint PCS was basking in the glory of its 1.2 million subscriber additions for the third quarter, Cingular Wireless, the joint venture between BellSouth and SBC Communications, added 95,000 customers in the same period, far short of the 700,000 customers analysts had expected.

During a conference call with analysts, BellSouth blamed the disappointing numbers on the high number of voluntary disconnects among its prepaid customers. Cingular intentionally lowered the number of prepaid customers by reducing the expiration date on prepaid cards from 180 days to 90 days.
