China's potential radiation standards to challenge cell phone manufacturers

China reportedly is considering tougher mobile phone radiation standards due to fears of health risks. As a result, global cell phone makers would have to shell out more cash to adjust equipment for the Chinese market, which ultimately could cost the industry billions of dollars.

China's proposed rules would cap the legal amount of radiation that can be passed from a handsets to users to 1 watt per kilogram, compared with 2 watts in other countries. Some companies affected by the new rules would include Motorola, Ericsson, Samsung and Siemens, all of which supply devices to China.
