AT&T Wireless asked the FCC to give it until March 2002 to install the needed hardware and software on its wireless network. Wireless carriers are supposed to begin building E911 systems by Monday, Oct. 1.

The FCC is considering 54 carrier waivers and could have a decision on them as soon as next week. While the Commission could fine carriers up to $10,000 per day after Oct. 1 for noncompliance, it has not confirmed what it will do.
