CableLabs sets specs for retail-based set-top boxes

CableLabs has issued a set of specifications describing requirements for retail products compatible with its advanced host and high-definition set-top boxes.

The specifications, which are available to manufacturers, content developers and the public, establish a road map for companies to create a wide variety of retail products that can fully support interactive services and digital high definition TV [HDTV] signals delivered over cable networks.

The advanced host products will also be the first to support specifications for interactive services that use the embedded DOCSIS-compatible modem built into set-top boxes for applications such as interactive games, video e-mail and instant messaging.
