BellSouth wins long distance approval in five states

The FCC today approved BellSouth’s application provide in-region long-distance service in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina under Section 271 of the Telecom Act. This brings to seven the number of states in which BellSouth is authorized to provide long-distance service. It received FCC approval for Georgia and Louisiana in May.

According to BellSouth, competitors control 13.4% of the local access lines in North Carolina, 11.9% in Alabama, 11.8% in South Carolina, and 8.4% in both Mississippi and Kentucky. The carrier said about 300 competitors control 4.5 million lines throughout its region.

BellSouth said it would begin offering long-distance service in the five states on September 27. It also said it would file a 271 application for Florida and Tennessee “in the very near future.”
