BellSouth to stay in pay phone biz

BellSouth will not exit the pay phone business as previously expected, the company announced Friday. Instead, it will continue to maintain its 143,000 pay phones in nine southeastern states until at least 2003.

The company had announced in February that it would abandon the business by the end of next year, but company officials said BellSouth decided to extend the date because several of its largest customers have contracts for pay phone service until 2003.
