BellSouth will be using Lucent’s Metropolis DMX access multiplexers and Cisco’s ONS 15454 MSPP (part of Cisco’s COMET portfolio) for the task.

BellSouth has already deployed about 70 of these platforms since January for interoffice OC-192 applications (connecting central offices) and has ordered 125 more.

“This is the largest Sonet decision we’ve made in 10 years or more,” said Alan Blackburn, BellSouth research director of advanced network architecture concepts.

In the future, BellSouth will use the gear to launch a metro Ethernet offering that Cisco’s enterprise sales force will help sell, said Blackburn.

He added that BellSouth’s relationship with Fujitsu, its incumbent Sonet equipment provider, will “stay where it’s at.”
