BellSouth cutting another 1200

Citing the effects of a weak economy, BellSouth Friday announced plans to reduce its work force by 1200 positions during the first quarter of 2002. The cuts will affect most non-management job titles within the company’s network organization. BellSouth is offering voluntary separation packages to affected employees, which it hopes will allow it to achieve the reduction on a voluntary basis.

This is the second round of layoffs BellSouth has announced this quarter. In October, the company said it was reducing its headcount by 3000. About two-thirds of that round of layoffs has been accomplished. Today’s announcement follows yesterday’s news that fellow incumbent Qwest Communications plans to cut 7000 positions due to the economic slowdown.
