Avici makes job cuts

Router developer Avici Systems has revealed it will reduce its work force by 40 employees, or 12% of the company.

President and CEO Steve Kaufman blamed the reduction on the continued carrier market slowdown, noting the company believes market conditions remain flat through the first half of 2002.

The announcement came as Enron, one of Avici’s biggest customers, filed for bankruptcy. Purchases from Enron accounted for 10% of Avici’s revenue in both the fourth quarter of 2000 and the first quarter of 2001, according to company reports. Avici AT&T, France Telecom’s R&D operation, and Williams as customers along with Enron.
