AT&T Wireless gives 3G upgrade $1 million infusion

During the Lehman Brothers telecommunications conference in Florida this week, AT&T Wireless Chairman and CEO John Zeglis announced the company expects to spend $1 billion on its final network upgrade to third generation technology.

That figure does not include the $2.5 billion the company expects to pay for GPRS, an intermediary technology as it heads towards 3G, nor does it include the few hundred million dollars the company expects to spend for the next step to 3G, called EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution).

AT&T Wireless plans on installing 3G not only to add more users to wireless networks, but for always-on, high-speed data connectivity and high-quality video and audio.
