AT&T to offer Illinois residential service starting in June

AT&T today announced it would begin offering residential local service in Illinois starting in June. The decision to roll out the service is a direct result of an Illinois Commerce Commission order issued last October that forced SBC Communications' subsidiary Ameritech to lower wholesale rates for unbundled network elements (UNEs), according to AT&T.

AT&T said it would initially provide local service to Illinois residents through UNE leasing, but would eventually build its own facilities "where feasible." The company already provides local service to businesses in the Chicago metropolitan area and to residential customers via its broadband digital phone service. AT&T began offering local phone service to Michigan customers in February 2001 and currently has 50,000 residential customers.
