New CEO James Barnett will oversee an Internet company whose ranks have been decimated in the last year. Since last summer, AltaVista had seen its work force shrink from 950 employees to 500. The current round of layoffs will cut it by another 30 percent.

Barnett replaces Rod Schrock, who resigned just over a year ago but was not replaced. Barnett was an executive with several other Internet companies before joining AltaVista.
