The cutbacks are scheduled to take place throughout the second and third quarters and will be completed by the fourth quarter of this year. Cost savings and charges related to the cuts have not been announced.
The affected facilities are located in Andover, Mass., Milpitas, Calif., and Portland, Ore., and will all shut down.
The Portland facility focuses on the manufacturing of undersea fiber cable and accounts for approximately 480 of the layoffs.
The Andover and Milpitas locations are centered on the development of Alcatel’s 7510 media gateway family and the 7420 edge router, respectively.
“The work [from these locations] will transfer to either Europe or Canada,” said an Alcatel spokesman. “It remains to be seen how many of these employees will go to other locations.”
The announcement marks Alcatel’s second round of layoffs this year. In April, the company said that it was cutting 1100 jobs due to flagging business in the U.S.
